Advanced Sailing Week

Overview

This 5-day youth improvers advanced sailing week covers the RYA youth sailing syllabus stage 3 in a safe and fun learning environment. A great way to take your beginner skills to the next level by refining and learning the skills required to handle a sailing dinghy. You will be able to sail the boat in moderate winds to a good level.

Requirements

Ability: Sailing to the standard of our beginner sailing week or an RYA Stage 2 standard. If you are unsure, please contact the U Sail Bermuda team.

*Please Note: There needs to be a minimum of 3 participants, which is required to make this course guaranteed to run.

Day 1

Day 1 will consist of a centre site tour and an introduction around the centre to get familiar with the facilities and safety items. Rigging the boat to the correct wind conditions will be recapped before launching. The use of reefing sails will also be reviewed. On the water, a shake down sail to show the understanding of sailing to an RYA Youth Stage 2 standard with the 5 essentials. Towards the afternoon there will be a tacking and gybing session with using the 5 essentials.

Day 2

Day 2 will focus more on expanding your seamanship skills with coming alongside a moored boat and picking up a mooring. Along with the seamanship skills, downwind gybing will be the main focus. Towards the afternoon the sailor will start to understand the basics of racing around a course and the starting procedure. To further extend their theory, the sailors will understand how a sail works, lee shore dangers, sailing in a close space and communication aboard.

Day 3

Towards the middle of the week, a short review of upwind and downwind will ensure the students have good wind awareness. The instructor will demonstrate a dummy buoy person over board from a dinghy and the students will be able to practise the procedure. A triangle course will be set to recap sailing around a course using the 5 essentials, tacking, gybing and all points of sail. Towards the afternoon, a review of seamanship skills of coming alongside and picking up a mooring will be revised.

Day 4

Day 4 will start off with understanding how to rig up for different wind strengths. Also, launching and recovery will be looked at further in a range of wind conditions such as cross shore and onshore. A key point will be to keep speed up during the tacks and gybes. In the afternoon, communication between helms and crews will be discussed with switching the roles so both get a feel of each position.

Day 5

Day 5 will be a review of the week with recapping upwind and downwind techniques. Tacking and gybing swapping the crew and helm positions will be carried out to ensure good communication and equal experience. A knot tying demonstration by your instructor to tie the essential knots such as the bowline and clove hitch will be given. The students will where necessary have the chance to practise knot tying. To complete the week, there will be some fun racing on a triangle course to further refine the skills learnt.

Equipment

We provide the boats, buoyancy aid, water refill station (Please bring your own water bottle for refilling, No Cups will be provided) and Helmets can be provided if desirable.

Facilities

We have a covered shaded area where we can have land based discussions with a big whiteboard, sit to eat lunch or just take a break. We have individual changing and rest rooms available for use as well as an outdoor shower.

My son and I were total novices and took the RYA Level 1 course over two days at the end of September, coached by Adriana. Little did we know that she was a world level expert in Laser sailing. What we can say is that she was a brilliant teacher.
