Beginner Sailing Week

Overview

This 5-day beginner sailing week which covering the RYA youth sailing syllabus stage 1 and 2 in a safe and fun learning environment. A great starting point for students to take to the water for the first time. At the end of the week, you will have an understanding of the basic points of sail.

Requirements

Ability: Ideally, being able to swim

Age: 9+years at minimum

Age: 10+ for Double handed 420 boats

* The timings may vary slightly between different activity weeks, but this will be confirmed in the welcome email.

Due to covid-19, we are staggering drop off and pick up timings of the activity week groups to keep gatherings to a minimum at the centre.

**Please Note: A minimum of 3 participants is needed to guarantee this course to run.

Itinerary

A sample itinerary for our 5 day beginner sailing week which can change slightly depending on weather and group sizes/ages

Day 1

Day 1 will consist of rigging demonstrations, land drills and on the water familiarisation practice. We will practise basic boat controls which includes stopping and starting using the rudder to steer and using the mainsheet. Tacking beam reach to beam reach will be the goal. The instructor will demonstrate a capsize recovery drill before launching for the first session.

Day 2

Day 2 starts with sailing around a figure of eight course. When coming in for lunch we will have a closer look at securing a boat to a trolley. In the afternoon, we will practise a capsize recovery drill so that all sailors are comfortable when the boat tips over. Safety always remains paramount as the sailor builds up confidence. We will progress to sailing upwind towards the wind for the first time.

Day 3

Towards the middle of the week we will have a review of days 1 and 2 as well as covering the 5 essentials of sailing a dinghy and the different points of sail. We will continue to learn and refine your sailing skills by looking at sailing around a triangle course. We will look at basic knot tying and where they can be used on the boat.

Day 4

On day 4, we will review the 5 essentials and points of sail to grow our knowledge and their applications to different wind conditions. The instructor will demonstrate gybing onshore before going afloat and putting it into practice. We will integrate the gybing manoeuvre into a triangle course. The instructor may use a follow my leader approach to perfect the skills learnt throughout the week.

Day 5

On the final day we will look at reviewing and refining the basic on water sailing skills around a triangle course. You will look at basic situations of rules of the road such as two dinghies on separate tacks coming towards each other. You will finish with a fun relay race around the triangle course.

Equipment

We provide the boats, buoyancy aid, water refill station (Please bring your own water bottle for refilling, No Cups will be provided)

Wetsuits are available for an additional price of $25 per activity.

Facilities

We have a covered shaded area where we can have land based discussions with a big whiteboard, sit to eat lunch or just take a break. We have individual changing and rest rooms available for use as well as a shower.

My son and I were total novices and took the RYA Level 1 course over two days at the end of September, coached by Adriana. Little did we know that she was a world level expert in Laser sailing. What we can say is that she was a brilliant teacher. We had two fantastic days out on Harrington Sound, and in spite of a few flip overs, particularly with our gybing when the wind picked up - Adriana made us feel that this was completely normal and gave us great tips to sort it out.
