RYA Marine Radio SRC Classroom Course

RYA Marine Radio SRC Classroom Course

Temporary Coronavirus Marine Radio SRC Update:

All Participants must wear a mask indoors at all times.

Disinfectant Wipes will be provided and VHF training radio microphones will be covered.

Description

A one day marine short range radio license course which is the minimum standard qualification by law in the UK needed to operate a marine VHF radio. The short range marine radio license is a classroom course with an SRC instructor and at the end of the one day course. Students complete the SRC with an independent SRC assessor and once successfully passing the SRC exam, a authority to operate certificate will be issued by the RYA in approximately 21 working days.

A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. Unnecessary transmissions could block out a Mayday distress call. Without a radio operators certificate, a VHF radio may be monitored for safety purposes or used to summon assistance in a distress situation, but it may not be used
for general transmissions. These can only be made by a licensed operator or by someone under the direct supervision of a licensed operator, this is a legal requirement on a British Flagged boat.

If you hold the old VHF licence (pre-1999) and you operate a VHF with DSC (digital
selective calling) integrated then you need to complete an update course to be issued
with a new Short range certificate (SRC).

It teaches you the fundamentals of using a short range VHF either fixed or portable unit.

A great classroom course for those who have interests in boating or have completed an RYA Powerboat Level 2 course and anyone who owns a fixed or handheld radio.

My son and I were total novices and took the RYA Level 1 course over two days at the end of September, coached by Adriana. Little did we know that she was a world level expert in Laser sailing. What we can say is that she was a brilliant teacher. We had two fantastic days out on Harrington Sound, and in spite of a few flip overs, particularly with our gybing when the wind picked up - Adriana made us feel that this was completely normal and gave us great tips to sort it out. A lovely family run business, super friendly, terrific location - I could think of no better place to learn how to sail - can't wait to do the Level 2.

“5 star to U Sail Bermuda. Great place to learn to sail. I’ve received my RYA Dinghy Level 2 certificate. Affordable rates for the weekend Learn to Sail for both Level 1 and Level 2. I am a pure beginner, so I like how they are in Harrington Sound with minimal boat traffic and it’s really just me trying to figure out where the wind is. They are all about safety so- someone is overlooking the water watching with a safety boat ready to go if required when you do boat hire (like I did after I’ve received my Level 2). Looking forward to hiring paddleboards and doing some windsurfing lessons with them. Overall, always received great service. All the instructors are very personable- Naphali, Donavin, Jonny and Thomas- Thank you for letting me achieve one of my bucket list.”
