Our Story

Many of Bermuda’s Olympic Sailors perfected their sailing skills on Harrington Sound. The likes of Peter Bromby, Malcolm Smith and Penny Simmons competed against one another under the banner of the now defunct Harrington Sound Sailing and Gliding Club to reach the pinnacle of Sailing and punch above their weight on the Olympic stage.

It was a family established sailing centre who decided to bring back sailing on Harrington Sound.

The first questions then were what boats to have, where to launch, where to keep the boats and where to store the equipment. The more we thought about it the more enthusiastic we became and with both Thomas and Adriana, our son and daughter, seriously sailing internationally we realized this was not only a great opportunity but also a lot of work.

Since all four of us love sailing we decided it was time to give back to this great sport. The frenzy of activity which surrounded the highly successful America’s Cup coupled with the Endeavour Program concentrated our minds on sailing for those over 16 years and for those who were less likely to be able to own their own boats but who wish to continue sailing in some form.

We therefore set up a limited liability company - U Sail Bermuda, initially funded by the family. Concentration on three classes of boat at first seemed sensible to appeal to those continuing to sail but at different levels. We chose C420s, 29ers and the exciting Waszp for those tempted by foiling following the success of the AC Series. C 420s give the opportunity in a double handed boat to progress towards the 470 Olympic class and 29ers are the pathway boat from RS Feva towards the 49ers, also at the Olympics.

We wanted to make these Sailing boats available on Harrington Sound, at any time, at a reasonable cost, to competent sailors who either want to improve their skills or just continue to enjoy Sailing.

We were fortunate to become an accredited Royal Yachting Association training centre in June 2019 when we had our initial centre inspection.

At this time, we also realized that some overseas Sailing Clubs were interested in coming to Bermuda to train and enjoy Bermuda’s wonderful waters when conditions at home were much less friendly.

U Sail Bermuda hopes to attract sailors of all ages (over 16) to enjoy and improve their Sailing and even aspire to Olympic dreams!
