School Adventure Trip

Overview

Join us for the adventure school trip of a life time to the water of Bermuda’s shores. Our body of water, Harrington Sound makes it the perfect place to learn or improve your sailing skills. For those who are competent in their sailing ability, we have a fleet of high performance 29er sailing boats to take advantage of trapezing and the boat speed. We also offer the full range of sail foiling experiences in a range of adapted boats with the Glide Free Foiling kit and a fantastic fleet of foiling Waszps, the internationally recognisied one design foiler.

Accommodation

Accommodation is provided on Paget Island which is located just off of the town of St. George’s which is twinned with Lyme Regis and accessible by a dedicated boat which takes 10-12 minutes. The buildings uses bunk-bed style arrangements for both boys and girls in separate buildings. A large green open space is available for on island evening activities after sailing. A large self catered kitchen is more than adequate to be able to feed hungry sailors.

Itinerary

A sample itinerary for our 9 day schools adventure trip which can change slightly depending on weather and group sizes/ages.

Day 1

You will arrive on your pre-organized flight which is done by the group leader but not included in our school adventure package. We shall arrange to have transportation waiting for you at the airport to take you to the pick up point in the town of St. George’s where a boat will take you across to Paget island. Depending on your time of arrival, you will either be unpacking or getting on the water for the rest of the afternoon. If the group arrives in the evening, the group leaders will organize food for the evening.

Day 2

The first day on the waters of Harrington Sound with the group in our C420 double hander boats for you to learn or improve your sailing skills. You will be able to get familiar with the boat as you learn to control speed and tack the boat around. For those wanting to advance their sailing skills, our 29er high performance sailing boats offer the ultimate in performance sailing. The first session consists of a boat orientation session and learning the techniques of trapezing. An after sailing land based activity or fun theory session will be offered.

Day 3

As you progress with learning to sail in our double hander boats by sailing upwind and downwind, you will understand the basics of wind awareness and start to rig the boat in teams. For those who have experienced their first 29er trapezing session, you will continue to perfect this skill with an introduction to sailing with an asymmetrical spinnaker on the 29er while the crew trapezes. A fun theory session will run for those learning to sail on points of sail and for those in the 29er learning about apparent wind.

Day 4

As you continue to refine sailing upwind and downwind, the instructor will demonstrate a gybing land drill before the group go out to try out gybing by themselves. The group sailing in the 29ers will be split into 2 groups to have their first flights foiling experience flying above the water in our fleet of foiling boats (Waszps, RS Aero, Laser). The other group will learn and refine their spinnaker hoist/drop technique and start to look at steering in the breeze.

Day 5

The group learning to sail will learn about the 5 essentials to sailing and how to apply them to sail around a triangle course. A day of more foiling and 29er sailing for the other group with the ones doing foiling to work towards their sustained flights level in the Waszp. The 29er group will combine their upwind and downwind skills on a windward/leeward course.

Day 6

As you progress with sailing around a triangle course, it will become a longer upwind sail to further learn and practice the use of your five essential skills. The foiling group will refine their sustained flight technique across the wind and start to learn to foil upwind in the Waszp. The 29er group will have the day to fine tune the balance between low mode and high mode when flying the asymmetrical spinnaker downwind.

Day 7

The beginner sailing group will look at some of the important skills such as coming alongside, picking up a mooring and using their sailing skills to practice sailing in more adverse wind conditions. The 29er and foiling group will alternate half day with each other to allow for all participants to have maximum time on foiling and 29er sailing.

Day 8

As the group has gained lots of new skills and experiences, whether its learning to sail or progressing your sailing to a 29er and even foil on the Waszps, a small, fun regatta will take place to allow the participants to use all the skills learnt and put them all together in one race.

Day 9

The last day of a fun and memorable school trip in paradise being able to sail on the waters of Harrington Sound. The last morning on Paget island with the students packing up their bags in preparation for departure. The group will still be able to get out on the water for the final day depending on the time of flight.

Facilities

The facilities available at Paget Island accommodation run by the department of youth, sport and recreation have separate male and female accommodation with individual showers and toilet facilities.

At the centre, we have a covered shaded area where we can have land based discussions with a whiteboard, sit to eat lunch or just take a break. We have individual changing and rest rooms available for use as well as a shower.

Base price*-see below- starts from $326.25 /per person

Unlimited basic boat hire (ex foiling and 29er equipment and tuition) is $220 / per person for the period of stay.

All 29er & foiling boats including 3 days Tuition is $695 / per person per stay.

Unlimited 29er boat hire with on water safety- $395 / per person per stay

Sailing and Windsurfing with daily tuition- $305 / per person per stay.

*The base price includes transportation to/from airport, transportation to/from Paget Island, transportation to/from U Sail centre each day. It also includes hostel-style accommodation (see photo above) and with a self catered kitchen (Food not included but we can shop in advanced for you) (Flight not included).

My son and I were total novices and took the RYA Level 1 course over two days at the end of September, coached by Adriana. Little did we know that she was a world level expert in Laser sailing. What we can say is that she was a brilliant teacher. We had two fantastic days out on Harrington Sound, and in spite of a few flip overs, particularly with our gybing when the wind picked up - Adriana made us feel that this was completely normal and gave us great tips to sort it out.
